Current Research

The Tearoom Sex Study started many changes to modern research.

The National Research Act:

  • Created in 1974 to provide protection for human involved in biomedical or behavioral research.

The Creation of the Institutional Review Board
      • Makes sure that risk to human subjects is minimized
      • Measures any risks as opposed to benefits
      • Ensures that the selection of subjects is fair
      • Requires informed consent from subjects, and the documentation that goes with it
      • Ensures the confidentiality of subjects
      • Safeguards against coercion or influence.

Belmont Report

The Belmont Report is "central to human research ethics" (Gabriele, 2003).

  • "Participation in research must be voluntary, and potentialresearch subjects must be presented with enough information about the study to make an informed decision regarding their participation" (Smale, 2010).

The Belmont Report also does the following:
  • Helps in solving ethical problems when using human subjects in research

  • Summarize the principles involved when problems arise when using humans in research

ETHICAL RESEARCH?

There are many arguments for and against Humphreys' research. Some believe his actions were justified because there was no other way to get the evidence but to "spy." Others believe this type of research to be unethical, stating an invasion of privacy by Humphreys not disclosing who he really was. Laud Humphreys believed he was doing nothing wrong, since he was spying for research purposes. The ethical debate continues in these modern times. One way to make the experiment more ethical, would be to get consent. Of course, the participants were many times hiding "another life" that others did not know about. It would be very difficult to make this research ethical considering all of the severe ethics violations.
